Shelton was born on June 18, 1976, to Dorothy, a beauty salon owner in Ada, Oklahoma, and Richard Shelton, a regularly used car salesman. Shelton began singing at a young age and was taught to play guitar by her uncle at age 12. She had written her first song at age 15. She won a ‘Denbo Diamond Award’ in her home state at the age of 16. Her older brother Richie Shelton was killed in a car accident on November 13, 1990. She moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a singing career, after graduating from high school at the age of seventeen. There she got a job at a music publisher. Also, Bobby Braddock helped him land a production deal with Sony Music in 1997.
