BIOGRAPHY
A graduate of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, Brett Ratner directed a short film entitled Whatever Happened to Mason Reese as a thesis project in 1990. Funded by a donation from Amblin Entertainment, this film won several university distinctions. After a stint in video clips, in 1997 he directed his first feature film, Cash , a comedy about the misadventures of a small-time crook ( Chris Tucker ) and a journalist ( Charlie Sheen ) struggling with a diamond trafficker.
Still in the same register, Brett Ratner had his first big success with Rush hour (1998), an action comedy which allowed Jackie Chan to conquer the American public. This film broke box office records, generating $250 million in revenue worldwide. Building on this success, the filmmaker will return for two more episodes: Rush Hour 2 (2001) and Rush Hour 3 (2007). In the meantime, he directed the romantic comedy Family Man (2000), in which Nicolas Cage , as an overworked businessman, discovers the pleasure of starting a family with Téa Leoni .
Against all expectations, in 2002 producer Dino De Laurentiis entrusted Brett Ratner with the adaptation of Red Dragon , the first opus of the Hannibal saga, the opportunity for the filmmaker to radically change register. Now known for his qualities as a “good doer”, he was also called to the rescue to replace John Stockwell in the direction of Coup d’explosion (2004) and Matthew Vaughn , who deserted the filming of X-Men: The Last Stand in 2005.
Brett Ratner is not only a director, he is also a producer. And this, assiduously since 2005. In addition to being the executive producer of the hit series Prison Break , he participates in the production of films such as Las Vegas 21 (2008), Skyline (2010) and How to Kill Your Son. Boss? (2011).
Absent from the sets for six years, we found him again in 2011 for The Central Park Heist , a comedy which is in line with his Rush Hour saga , led with great success by Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy . He then participated in the sketch film My Movie Project (2013), for which he directed the Happy Birthday segment. The following year, the director was at the helm of the new adaptation of the adventures of the demi-god Hercules , with the imposing Dwayne Johnson in the title role.
Devoting a lot to his role as producer of films ( Strictly Criminal , The Revenant , etc.) and series ( Rush Hour , Prison Break, etc.), Brett Ratner was accused, shortly after the start of the Weinstein affair in October 2017, of sexual harassment by six actresses. A few days later, Ellen Page denounced his homophobic behavior during the filming of X-Men: The Last Stand , and Gal Gadot threatened not to star in Wonder Woman 1984 if Ratner (who denies the accusations) remained a producer.
Warner therefore ousts him from the blockbuster and the filmmaker cancels his biopic project on the famous creator of Playboy, Hugh Hefner (to be played by Jared Leto ). Brett Ratner remained very discreet in the years to come until February 2021, when it was announced that he was going to produce a biopic dedicated to the Franco-German R’n’B duo Milli Vanilli (whose success was broken by a scandal in 1989). News that arouses the anger of many people given the accusations against the director of Rush Hour.
