Susan Moonsie is an American musician best known as a member of the girl musician trio, called “Vanity 6” (1982-1983), which was later transformed into “Apollonia 6” (1983-1985). Both bands were protégés of music icon Prince, and Susan Moonsie was one of them.

Under Prince’s tutelage, Vanity 6 released their self-titled debut album in 1982. This album was the only album released by the trio before the departure of its lead singer. The band found a replacement for their lead singer and was later renamed ‘Apollonia 6’ and just like Vanity 6, Apollonia 6 also released a studio album before they fell into oblivion.

In addition to her musical career, Susan Moonsie was also known to be in love with Prince. Throughout Prince’s 40 years of existence, he has been associated with several women at different times. However, he wasn’t just with them for camaraderie, he found them as inspiration. Many of his songs were inspired by the women in his life and Susan Moonsie could be said to have been one of Prince’s muses.

Susan Moonsie Bio

Susan Moonsie was born on January 21, 1964 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The gorgeous singer is a black American originally from Trinidad and Tobago. She is also of Indian descent.

As a singer, Moonsie burst into the limelight in the early 80s as a member of the all-girl music trio known as Vanity 6. The trio was formed by the late American pop musician, Prince. Prince, who had just started his own music career, was inspired to form and nurture a musician/band after watching the musical drama film A Star Is Born Barbra Streisand alongside Kris Kristofferson.

The group had a risque image and their lyrics were generally too sultry. Due to their raunchy lyrics, most of their songs were declared unfit for radio. The trio typically wore lingerie in their cover photos and during their stage performances.

Vanity 6 was comprised of Susan Moonsie, Brenda Bennett, and lead singer of the trio, Denise Matthews and Vanity. The trio only released one studio album titled Vanity 6. The single titled Mean Girl reached the top of the US Dance chart and peaked at number 7 on the US R&B chart. The band also made their stage debut on Prince’s 4th concert tour titled Tour de 1999 (1982-1983).

However, the singer of the group left the group abruptly in 1983 to pursue a solo career. She is quickly replaced by Patricia Kotero whose stage name is Apollonia. Following Vanity’s replacement by Apollonia as lead singer, the Vanity 6 trio was renamed to Apollonia 6. Apollonia 6 also released a single studio album before its final disbandment in 1985.

After the breakup, Susan Moonsie did not pursue a solo musical career. She has totally escaped the media radar and she barely grants interviews.

The “Vanity 6 band” was originally formed by Susan Moonsie and she was the intended leader of the band. However, the young singer was shy and unable to take on the role of the group’s lead singer. Therefore, when Prince met the brave Denise Mattews aka Vanity, he was fascinated by her and kidnapped her to become the leader of the group.

The group Vanity 6 was originally going to be called “Hookers”. This alternative nickname, chosen by none other than legendary musician Prince, is a representation of the daring sexuality of the musician who died at this time.
