Born as Shelton Jackson Lee in Atlanta, Georgia on March 20, 1957, he is the eldest of four children of Jacqueline Carroll, a black literature teacher, and James James Edward Lee III, a jazz musician. As a child, Lee developed a keen interest in acting and theatrical production. He performed in several theater shows during his high school.
He was raised in Brooklyn, where he graduated. John Dewey High School is located in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn.
